Today my job is to identify my purpose. That one thing that God has created me to be. To do. When my business coach first gave me the assignment I resisted it.
“Can’t I have more than one? Because there’s more than one thing. I’m a wife and a mom and that’s really important. That has to be part of my purpose.”
He said no. I was missing the point. Identifying my purpose isn’t about listing the roles that I play in life, it’s about realizing who I am. Who I am meant to be.
Don’t we all do that? Don’t we all tend to think that we are what we do. We are the roles that we play. I’ve heard that men nearly always talk about their careers when they first meet someone new. That they do this because they get their identity from their jobs. From what they do. Women talk about their family. Their husband, their kids, their pets. For women it’s often not just about what we do that we find identity in, but who we do it for. Who we’re taking care of.
Our purpose is bigger than all these things. Our purpose is who we are. As our roles change from season to season our purpose is the constant that remains the same.
I haven’t completed the assignment yet. I’m still struggling to separate who I am from what I do and who I care for. It’s harder than one would think it should be. Or maybe it’s just me… Do you know your purpose? I’d love to hear it. Maybe hearing yours will help me figure out how to identify mine. Please leave a comment.
