On Fridays I join with others from around the blogosphere over at The Gypsy Mama and together we stop, drop, and write.
We write bold and beautiful and free. Unscripted and unedited. We just write without worrying if it’s just right or not.
Here’s my best 5 minutes on:
The dinner table buzzes with the commotion of eating and laughing and talking.
Only I stop when he finally calls me mama.
My heart feels like it might burst in this moment because I can see he’s adjusting.
For days he’s tip-toed around it, not calling me anything,
but now it’s dinner time and he’s distracted with hunger
and the buzz of the eating and laughing and talking
and “Mama” just spills out of him.
And I stop.
Because I can’t move now.
But I have to move.
And the mommy in me takes over as I go about my mommy doings.
And the mommy in me is glad that no one else has noticed as the buzz continues.
He’s been adjusting.
Dad has been “Dad” since he got here on Saturday, but Mamas are different.
Mama is a special title in this little boys heart.
And I feel it when he says it.
I feel the authority of his Mama.
I feel the love, acceptance, promise, and trust.
All this is the progress of the last 3 days.
Bedtime is becoming routine.
Play is becoming salted with the bickering of siblings.
Fear is being drowned out by love.
The love is winning.
But bedtime is still hard.
And he asks when I’m going to take him home.
And my mommy heart breaks all over again.
There is risk in this opportunity.
I feel the cost.
Father in Heaven, thank you for this glorious opportunity. I pray for your strength when I feel the sting that it brings. Thank you for each day that my trust in you grows because of this beautiful thing you are doing. I pray your grace and love over all those who are involved. May we all see how you have worked everything for good. In Jesus name, amen.
