Sacrifice: To surrender or give up for the sake of something else.
My 9 year old is amazing.
She has always been something special.
She has an ability to sacrifice of herself for others.
This side of her often shows it’s self in her relationships to her siblings.
She did the most amazing thing today.
Today is freezing.
Snow and leaves are stuck fast to the frozen ground.
It was perfect for two children curious to see what our new property looks like in winter.
So the two set out.
All bundled up.
Out to see the where the creek meets frozen earth.
Laughing as their nose turned red from the sudden cold as they ran off into the trees.
Baby and I watched from the window.
20 minutes later I can hear them returning.
My 6 year old son in tears.
He comes in looking half frozen.
His hair and eyes wild from the cold.
His big sister is not with him.
The only evidence of her is her boots on his feet.
Down by the fence she is working her way home.
Moving carefully in just her socks.
Frantically I get them both in the house.
I wrap their feet in blankets and heating pads in front of the fire.
Now I have time to ask questions.
They share their story with me.
My adventurous son decided to cross the creek, against his sisters advice.
Then he got stuck.
And she went in after him.
Her feet were warm in her boots.
But his were cold in tennis shoes now soaked through.
He couldn’t walk. His shoes kept falling off. He wasn’t going to make it home.
So she did the most amazing thing.
She made a brave sacrifice.
She surrendered her shoes to him.
To her it was the only choice.
And my heart melts.
Oh this wonderful, beautiful, brave daughter of mine.
Surely I have been a blessed woman to have had this child born to me.
There is none like her.
And none more aware of her uniqueness than me.
Father in Heaven, Thank you for this special, special girl. The way she blesses me and teaches me how to hold onto the comforts of this world with open hands and with a heart open to the needs of others. Lord, I know You will accomplish much through her. I pray that she would continue to grow in You; in love, and peace, and kindness… And always with the humble spirit of surrender. In Jesus holy name, amen.
