The Good Wife’s Guide
For the past few weeks our church has been doing a study called Reflecting the Heart of God. It’s been powerful and I’ve been challenged with each lesson. This week was no exception.
This week we studied passages from Mark chapters 8-10. On 3 separate occasions the disciples questioned Jesus about how to be great, powerful men of authority in the new kingdom. Each time Jesus explained that in order to be a spiritual giant you must become a humble servant, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.” -Matthew 10:45
I couldn’t help but be impressed, amazed, and a little startled by God’s timing. You see, last week I had the wonderful fortune to read The Good Wife’s Guide, a new ebook by the New York Times best selling author Darlene Schacht. As I quickly discovered, being a spiritual giant requires the same thing as being a good wife, humility and service.
Certainly, this is no easy task. It’s hard and often uncomfortable to put someone else’s needs above your own. I admit I have not been a very good servant in the past- at least not consistently. Fortunately, part 2 of The Good Wife’s Guide is full of practical application. This section of the book is a literal step-by-step for how to get your home and life organized, which will make following her Things I Do to Prepare for My Husband list found in chapter 4 that much easier to follow.
I love Darlene’s book and I strongly encourage you to purchase The Good Wife’s Guide if you are serious about showing your husband how much you love him, serious about making your family a priority, and serious about humbly serving Christ.
Darlene Schacht also writes regularly on her blog, The Time-Warp Wife, offering even more encouragement to wives who want to serve their husbands and families.
Hi, I just found your blog through SITS. I definitely don’t have your faith, but reading through your posts and your mom’s story really shines with your faith through every word. You have a wonderful blog!
Thanks so much for that! I would love it if you sent me a friend request at SITS. I just started in that community yesterday and I’m still trying to find my way around.
I even replied wrong on here! Sheesh!
All other books I’ve read about being a “good wife” have left me feeling exhausted. I have to wonder if I am reading them the way the author intended. I’ll have to go and check out her blog.
We’re reading the 5 Love Languages One Year Devotional together and it’s given us a lot to talk about.
Thanks for posting Jennifer!
Ugh, Johnlyn, I totally know what you mean! Definitely check out the blog The Time-Warp Wife. I think you’ll quickly discover Darlene has a way of motivating and encouraging without overwhelming. If you buy the book you’ll discover that Part 2 of The Good Wife’s Guide is very similar to your ebook, Feed Your Family, in that it also has clearly written, simple steps to take. Darlene makes it clear in her book that she’s not an organized person by nature, she says that she aims to have her house tidy but it’s OK for it to still look lived in. Darlene doesn’t want to turn anyone into June Cleaver, rather she wants to show you how to celebrate the woman that you were created to be. I hope I’ve cleared that up a little for you, but really, you want to check out her website.
I’m so glad that the 5 Love Languages book is blessing you and your marriage! Nate and I just finished The Great Divorce and The Abolition of Man by CS. Lewis. We plan on starting Quitter by Jon Acuff next. Neither is really related to our marriage, but it’s still leading to great conversation and creating unity between us. God is good!
Thanks for the details – I’ll check it out!
Maybe I should look into something we could listen to together…but my mind wanders while I try to listen so I’d have to have the book and Wes could listen.
I know what you mean, I’ve had a terrible time trying to focus. I need something mindless to keep my hands busy, lol.
Oh dear… you can send friend requests on there? Um… hahaha, I guess I’m not the one to ask for advice!!
Ha! I just sent you a request. You can find members by searching here: http://forum.thesitsgirls.com/members/. It took me what felt like forever to figure that out!
Thank you!
Hi Jennifer,
I love your blog and am so encouraged — I’m going to checkout this book and her website!
Thanks Krista!
